Obituary for Mary B. Guzik (Buckley)

Mary B. Guzik (Buckley)
Mary Buckley Guzik, 94, of Windsor died on January 31, 2018 at Arden Court in Avon. Mary was born in Windsor Locks on October 13, 1923, the daughter of the late William A. Buckley and Cecelia L. Dowling. She was the beloved wife of the late Ben Guzik.

She was raised in Windsor Locks, and graduated from Windsor Locks High School. Mary began her career at Connecticut General where she made many dear and lifelong friends. She continued her career at Dexter Corporation and worked there for more than 20 years retiring in 1988 as Executive Assistant to Worth Loomis, President of Dexter Corp.

After World War II, Mary could be found at USO dances in Holyoke and the Polish National Home in Hartford. It was at one of these dances that she met her future husband Ben Guzik. They were married in 1954, and moved to Windsor in 1960 where they joyfully built their home and life together. Mary lost Ben after 20 years, when he died of pancreatic cancer at age 42, in 1974.

Mary never remarried, but she had a full and interesting life, filled with adventure and the love of family and friends. Each year Mary would receive in excess of 100 birthday cards on her birthday from those who loved her, and her Christmas card book was a 3-hole binder, 4 inches thick, neatly typed (of course).

Mary’s kindness, gentleness and faith were evident to all who knew her. She was guided by her love for her family and friends and her devotion to the Catholic faith. Her passions involved the beach, shopping (especially with her late sister), playing the organ and hot fudge sundaes.

In addition to her parents and husband Ben, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Cecelia B. and Edgar L. Sanstrom, as well as her nephew Neal W. Sanstrom.

She is survived by her two nieces, Sheila S. Moses and her husband, Paul, and Cynthia J. Sanstrom. Sheila, Cynthia, and Paul will dearly miss Aunt Mary and the rousing organ renditions of Happy Birthday she would play for each of them on their birthdays. She also leaves a great nephew Daniel Sanstrom, a great niece Samantha Buckley Sanstrom, as well as a first cousin Marilyn Christian.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Arden Court, and Mary’s aides Elsa, Jasmine, and Faith for their care for Mary over the past five years.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Saturday, February 17, 2018, from 9 to 10:30 AM at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A funeral procession will form at the funeral home at 10:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 AM at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
