Bertha T. Alaimo (Rackis)
Bertha Alaimo, of Enfield, passed away on Feb. 12, 2017, 50 days shy of her 105th birthday. Bertha was the daughter of the late Carl and Marcella Rackis. Although a Lithuanian, Bertha learned the art of Italian cooking from her mother-in-law, and that combined with her own innate ability, gave her a reputation on Jefferson Street and among friends and family of being an excellent Baker and Cook. Bertha was a communicant of St. Bernard Church in Hazardville. She was employed for 30 years at the Hazardville Memorial Grammar School as the Cafeteria Manager. She was such a fine cook and friend, that when the principal left for another school, he asked her to go with him. She also worked with her husband at the family business. B. Alaimo's Market. Bertha was a kind, gentle and loving person who will be deeply missed by all her friends and family. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the administration of Parkway Pavilion and especially to the nurses and staff of the East Wing who gave her so much care and attention. Also a thank you to the recreation department that were cheerful and kind in providing her with enjoyable days. Bertha is survived by her son, Benjamin M. Alaimo and his wife Cypra of South Windsor, her daughter, Carmen Locke and her husband Stephen of Conway, SC, her son Matthew Alaimo of Central Falls, RI, her grandchildren, Matthew Alaimo and his wife Terry, Benjamin Alaimo Jr., and her great grandchildren, Nicholas and Christopher Alaimo. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lillian Alaimo and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Matthew J. Alaimo, her four siblings, and her former daughter-in-law, Angeline (Jean) Alaimo. Visitation hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. Family and friends will gather at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at Leete-Stevens for a procession to St. Bernard Church in Enfield for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.
